How AI Recommendations Are Changing Brand Choice
AI recommendations are turning into purchases
AI is already doing more than helping consumers collect information. Among AI shoppers in our study, 42% said they purchased something AI recommended, which makes AI a fairly large part of the path to purchase.
A recommendation can introduce a brand, validate an option, narrow the choices, or give a shopper enough confidence to act.
AI is also changing decisions
More than half of AI shoppers said AI changed at least one purchase decision. Among the 139 shoppers whose decision changed, 55% switched brands.
Thirty-seven percent were talked out of making a purchase, and the same share said AI convinced them to spend less. Eighteen percent said it convinced them to spend more.
We are careful about how we describe that finding. The study measures consumers’ reported influence from AI. It does not establish AI as the only reason for each decision. Even with that limitation, the takeaway is pretty clear: AI can help one brand get chosen while pushing another one out of consideration.
Being mentioned is not the same as winning
A lot of the current conversation is about whether brands are visible in AI answers. It matters, but also matters what shows up.
A brand can show up in the answer and still lose the comparison.
AI tools may compare value, reviews, features, pricing, claims, availability, fit, and other information. If another option has the stronger offer, the tool can explain why the shopper should choose it instead.
The product, pricing, proof, experience, and positioning still have to hold up side by side.
The recommendation still has to convert
There is another piece that can get overlooked. Even if AI recommends the brand, the rest of the path to purchase still has to work.
Is the product available?
Is the price accurate?
Can the shopper find a retailer?
Does the product page answer the obvious questions?
Is checkout easy?
Does anything create doubt between the recommendation and the purchase?
Brands should also start looking at AI-referred traffic and sales where they can. That can help show which platforms and recommendation paths are actually creating activity.
What brands should do now
Start paying attention to why the brand is recommended, why it is passed over, and what happens after the recommendation. If AI makes comparison easier, brands need to be genuinely competitive when consumers compare them side by side.
That means understanding the criteria that matter in the category, strengthening weak points in the offer, and making it easy to act once the brand is recommended.
AI is becoming another place where brand competition happens. The important part goes beyond simply being included in the answer into giving the shopper a reason to choose you once you are there.
